Portfolio Value Update - September 2019

Hello everybody. Welcome back to my blog. We’re now in October and it’s time to report my September results. The markets have been pretty crazy lately. Lots of upside. The bank stocks did very well, increasing 7-10% on average in one month. This resulted my portfolio to reach new highs, in fact, New Milestone!! But, I don’t want to get too excited about that. We might experience the opposite move in October. The stock market is a roller coaster, the stocks go up and down, but the long-term trend is up. As long as we pick up solid companies that can sustain economic downturns, we should do fine. Without further ado, let’s look at my portfolio value, dividend income and YouTube earnings.

Portfolio Value
In September, my portfolio value increased by $3,631 to $80,418. Most of the increase came from stocks appreciation. As most of you know, I only contribute $575 per month to my stock portfolio to buy new stocks and I reinvest all dividends received during the month. Excluding the monthly contribution, my portfolio increased by 3.9% during September. But keep in mind, the whole Canadian market had big gains, so get ready for some bumps in October.

Dividends
Dividends received in September 2019: $363.00
Dividends received in September 2018: $284.65
Year-Over-Year Dividend Growth: $78.35 or 28%
Year-To-Date Dividend Income: $3,061.41

I’m very satisfied with the amount of dividends my portfolio generates. It’s free money for doing absolutely nothing. My year-to-date dividend income already surpassed the income of 2012-2013-2014 combined. Talk about the true power of compound growth!!!

Contributions
In September, I transferred $575 to my TFSA account. I will continue to contribute the same amount every month. My TFSA contribution limit will be reached by the end of this year.

Transactions
There was some action in September. I did two transactions. I sold Dream Global REIT (DRG.UN.TO) and bought Genworth (MIC.TO). I sold DRG because it will be acquired in December 2019. I didn’t want to wait until the deal is closed. The cash sale + monthly contribution + monthly dividends ended up invested in MIC. I already wrote about the transaction in a separate post.

AdSense Earnings
Important notice regarding my YouTube earnings. I only realized now that I’ve been reporting earnings in USD. My account was set up to report in USD dollars. I switched it to CAD dollars because that’s my currency. Going forward, I will be reporting YouTube earnings in CAD dollars. Here’s the graph of my previous months in USD and CAD.

Adsense earnings from blog: $0.65
Adsense earnings from YouTube: $133.09
Total AdSense earnings: $133.74

Adsense earnings are starting to grow again because we are approaching holiday season. I have a few videos on my channel about homes decorated in Christmas lights and they get a ton of traffic. Who would have thought that these videos would be so popular?

  2. Nice growth German.

Looks like you got quite a heavy allocation of reits(based on your top 10 holdings). Any plans to diversify that a bit, or are you comfortable with the breakdown?

    1. Hey Jordan. Thanks for stopping by. I love REITs. It’s like a being a virtual landlord. I will probably consolidate some names into residential and industrial reits. As I keep investing in other stocks like Banks, Utilities, and Insurances, my REIT exposure will fall.
