Portfolio Value Update - July 2017

The month of July have passed and it's time for me to report my dividend investing progress. The month of July was one of the worst performing month for my portfolio. The Canadian stock market continued to decline and dipped bellow 15,000, but it's now showing a sign of bottoming. Hopefully stocks will recover in August and will give my portfolio a boost. Meanwhile, let's see how my portfolio performed in July.

Portfolio Value
As of July 31, 2017 my investment portfolio balance stood at $44,812.24. That’s an increase of $173 from last month. If you take out the monthly contribution and dividends from the equation, then my portfolio had a negative net change. One of the reasons for such performance is an increase in interest rates. Since I have a big exposure to REITs, when interest rates go up, REITs are negatively affected.

Dividends
Dividend income is a passive income for which I don’t have to work for. I simply invest in different corporations and collect dividends for owning the stock. In July, I received a total of $227.97 in dividends vs $183.83 for the same period a year ago. That's an increase of $44 or 24% on year-over-year basis. My cumulative dividend income for the year is $1,467.30.

Contributions
In July, I added $800 of fresh capital to my TFSA account. The maximum amount that I can contribute in 2017 is $5,500. Since I have contribution room from prior years, I will continue to add $800 per month until I reach my maximum contribution.

My Investment Account (TFSA)
My portfolio consists of 29 Canadian dividend paying stocks. Most of my stocks pay dividends on monthly basis. This allows me to collect dividends and reinvest them into dividend paying stocks more rapidly.

Transactions
I bought 230 units of Plaza REIT. You can read more about my recent purchase here.

Online Income
Last month I wrote about my intentions of exploring more ways to generate extra income online. Here's my first report and the break-down:

PTC Sites: $27.13 (23.57 from Neobux alone)
Surveys: $3.94 (I was lazy and did only a few surveys)
Adsense: $3.58 (Working on new content for YouTube and this blog)

Total online income: $34.65

$34.65 is a pocket change, but I would need an extra $6,900 invested in stocks in order to received the equivalent in dividends.

How was your month? What was your dividend income? Feel free to comment below. Thank you!

  5. Hi,

Thanks for sharing your online income. Have you shared stats on your pageviews? I'm wondering how high of pageviews you need to get $100/month with Adsense.

    Thanks,
    Mr. ATM

    1. Hey ATM,

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you enjoyed my report. About adsense earnings, that really depends on your content and clicks. Simple pageviews does not convert into earnings.

      Thanks!

  6. Thanks for the update. In my opinion cash flow from investments is what is truly important and not the size of portfolio.
