Portfolio Value Update - February 2019

Portfolio Value
On February 28, 2019 my investment portfolio was valued at $68,620. The value increased by $3,024 from previous month. I only added $575 of my own capital. The rest came from dividend payments and stock appreciation. And speaking of stock appreciation, I can highlight three companies that added significant value to my portfolio. These are Altagas, Canadian Apartment REIT and Killam Properties. You would think that REITs and Utilities perform badly when interest rates are going up, but in reality it doesn’t always boil down to interest rates. People need a place to live and they have to pay the utility bills. These expenses are unavoidable unless you live in your parents’ basement.

Dividends
Dividends received in February 2019: $322.75
Dividends received in February 2018: $236.45
Year-Over-Year Dividend Growth: $86.30 or 36%
Year-To-Date Dividend Income: $643.15

One of the activities that I enjoy is to sit down with my cup of coffee and calculate all the dividends that I received during the month. I did it last month and I did the exact thing this month. The beauty of dividend investing is that those dividend payments are rolling in month after month, no matter what.

AdSense Earnings
Adsense earnings from blog: $0.64
Adsense earnings from YouTube: $36.88
Total AdSense earnings: $37.52

For those who don’t know, I have a YouTube channel where I post my hobby related videos. These videos are monetized and I received a percentage off advertising revenue. The combined earnings from adsense were $37.52. It’s not much but at least it pays the internet bill. I think earnings will be higher in March because I plan to make more videos.

Contributions
In February I transferred $575 to my TFSA account. I will continue to contribute the same amount every month. My TFSA contribution limit will be reached by the end of this year.

Transactions
In February I made one transaction. I bought 70 shares of Cominar REIT. It’s one of my favorite, undervalued REIT in Quebec. Most of their properties are located in the province of Quebec so most of my readers will not be familiar with this company. I drive past their buildings daily so it makes it easier for me to decide whether I want to owe piece of their business on not. I provided more details about this purchase in my previous post.

  2. That was a great buy, Rob! My position in BPY is full so I didn't add to it. The stock did pretty good, especially in January.

If you keep maxing out that TFSA, that snowball is just gonna keep getting bigger and bigger. You will crack 100k in no time!
